Stay Passionate About Your Passions

Hobbies! We’ve all got them.

In our mind, hobbies are essential for three reasons:

  1. They offer a release from the busy work week.

  2. They connect us with a variety of people with differing interests.

  3. They hone our skills in diverse areas.

But the real question is, do you recognize the value in those additional skills you have? Most people don’t.

At In the Loop Houston, we’ve discovered the immense importance of transferable skills. Someone we know, let’s call them Alex, has a journey that is a testament to this realization. With a background in theatre, Alex transitioned into the business world, discovering that many skills from the stage were surprisingly applicable in a corporate setting.

As a Stage Manager, Alex was the central hub of a complex machine, liaising between every department – from the director to the stage crew, the costume shop, the prop shop, lighting, paint, and actors. This role demanded extreme organization, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple teams, all working towards a unified goal. Tasks included preparing audition paperwork, creating schedules and calendars, running rehearsals and production meetings, writing reports, sending out call times to actors, documenting blocking, and maintaining the entire show book. The list goes on.

These diverse responsibilities endowed Alex with a suite of transferable skills applicable to fields like event planning, project management, and human resources.

When Alex first ventured into the business world, it took time to find the right fit. The initial attempt at crafting a business resume felt sparse. There was a struggle with the notion that the last eight years, spent in a field Alex loved, seemed irrelevant to what was perceived as the “real” start of a career. Comparing the arts to the business world on a simplistic level led to feelings of discouragement about past experiences.

However, it was through the process of building businesses that Alex began to recognize the wealth of skills honed in theatre. It became clear that the value lay not in the specific job title or industry but in the personal growth and lessons learned from those experiences.

Alex realized that this new realm called business wasn’t so foreign after all. In fact, Alex was good at it.

We share this story to encourage you not to give up on your hobbies even when they might initially seem counterintuitive. If Alex had disregarded experiences in theatre and tried to start with a clean slate, the journey would have been much harder. Embracing those experiences and demonstrating their value to others was key. Understanding personal value was the first step.

Don’t give up on your hobbies and passions outside of your work life. You might turn around one day and realize they are not that different from one another!
